Cleaning the drain: an important task in outdoor areas

Cleaning the drain: an important task in outdoor areas

Drains can quickly become clogged in outdoor areas. It is therefore crucial to clean the drain quickly to prevent flooding, moisture damage, material damage and even accidents. But how exactly does this work? Can you do the cleaning yourself or should you call in us, the sewer heroes? And finally, are there any preventative measures that can help?

Why external drains become blocked and need to be cleaned

Leaves, stones, mud and other debris often collect in the drains. Especially in the fall, when the trees shed their leaves, the risk of blockage is very high. But even in spring, stones from gritting and other debris often block the drain openings.

External drains can become blocked at any time of year. After heavy rainfall, dirt particles get into the drains and can block them. Recognize the problem early and act quickly to prevent major damage.

How to clean your outdoor drains

You do not usually need any special tools for superficial soiling. However, it is important to wear waterproof clothing, a face mask and a face mask. This is how you proceed:

  1. First remove the cover from the drain (some covers have a visible blockage and must be loosened with a crowbar, for example).
  2. Once you have removed the cover, remove the leaves and other debris from the drain. Place it in a bucket.
  3. Now just spray out the drain before putting the cover back into position.

If the drain is already open, you should also check the entire drainage pipe system. Sand, limescale and other deposits may be deeper in the pipes. We at Kanalhelden not only clean the drain, but also check the pipes for further blockages. If necessary, we can also carry out a complete Sewer cleaning, so that everything is sparkling clean again.

How to remove stubborn dirt from the drain

Sometimes simple cleaning is no longer sufficient. If the drain and pipe are completely blocked, even stubborn incrustations can be removed.

There are two common methods that you can try out for yourself:

  • Water jet with garden hose: Insert the hose into the drain. As soon as you come across a blockage, try to clear the blockage with a strong jet of water.
  • Drainage spiral: A drainage spiral helps to loosen stubborn blockages. The tip of the spiral drills into the blockage and removes it. Then rinse with water.

If these methods are not enough, you can remove stubborn incrustations with these professional techniques:

  • High pressure cleaner: Drains are cleaned with high water pressure, which can loosen even stubborn blockages.
  • Pipe cleaning machine: If the blockage cannot be cleared using other methods, a professional pipe cleaning machine is a good option. This works at high pressure and is ideal for thorough cleaning.

Cleaning the drain: an important task in outdoor areas

Act with foresight: Clean the drain in good time

It is always better to clean the drain before incrustations and blockages occur. You can inspect the drains regularly and remove any dirt yourself if necessary. Alternatively, you can leave the inspection and cleaning to the professionals.

We recommend having roof water, patio and yard drains professionally cleaned every 1 to 3 years. Depending on the environment and load, it also makes sense to carry out cleaning work more frequently. For example, if there is grit in the yard or the ground is packed, drains can become blocked more quickly. A regular visual inspection should also be carried out after long periods of rain.

Through the Sewer inspections you can quickly recognize whether dirt has accumulated. Remove these immediately and the drain is clear again. These small checks only take a few minutes and can prevent major damage.

FAQ on drain cleaning

If the water in the drain is only draining slowly or not at all, it is high time for a cleaning. It is also advisable to check the drains regularly after heavy rain.

If there is light soiling in the upper area of the drain, you can clean it yourself. For heavier incrustations and deep-seated blockages, however, it is advisable to call in us from Kanalhelden with our specialized technology.

It is not recommended to use chemicals for cleaning as they can damage the pipe, especially in older systems or if overdosed. In the worst case, lumps can form, leading to further blockages.

Use clean water for the floor drain. Spray on some washing-up liquid and use an old washing-up brush to clean the surface. If the drain has narrower openings, a toothbrush is also suitable for cleaning.
